Shopify opens its catalog and Shop Pay checkout to any AI agent: what changes for your store

On October 13, Shopify launched Shop MCP, letting AI agents search over a billion products and complete Shop Pay checkout. Here is what it means for merchants and what to check.

On October 13, Shopify launched Shop MCP: a single connection that lets an AI agent search Shopify Catalog, build a cart and complete a Shop Pay checkout. Shopify also says MCP clients such as ChatGPT and Claude can run the Shop sign-in for shoppers.

Here is what was announced, what it means for your store, and what to check.

What Shopify announced

According to Shopify's developer changelog:

  • Shop MCP gives agents access to over 1 billion products in Shopify Catalog. Search doesn't need an API key.
  • An agent can build a cart and create a checkout at the store that sells the product. Carts and checkout work without the shopper signing in.
  • If the shopper signs in with Shop, the agent can use their saved addresses and Shop Pay, and completes the purchase after the shopper confirms the total and payment method.
  • Orders placed this way appear in your Shopify admin like any other order.

In short: an AI agent can now go from "find me a linen duvet cover" to a paid order at your store, with the shopper approving the final step.

How this fits with selling in ChatGPT

This is separate from Shopify's Agentic Storefronts, which send eligible products to AI channels including ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and Meta.

For ChatGPT specifically, Shopify's Help Center describes it as a discovery channel: shoppers find your product in ChatGPT and finish buying on your own online store checkout, in an in-app browser or a new tab. It's on by default for eligible stores that sell to the US, and Shopify says there are no extra fees beyond standard payment processing.

So there are now two routes from an AI conversation to your store:

  1. Discovery, then your checkout — the assistant recommends your product and sends the shopper to your store (ChatGPT today).
  2. Agent checkout — an agent builds the cart and completes payment with Shop Pay on the shopper's behalf, after they approve it (Shop MCP, and AI channels that offer direct checkout).

What it means for merchants

Your product data is now your storefront. An agent choosing between three duvet covers reads titles, descriptions, prices, variants, stock and ratings from structured data. It never sees your hero banner or lifestyle photography. If your description is two lines long, the agent has two lines to work with.

Shop Pay matters more. The smoothest agent checkout runs through Shop Pay. If it's off on your store, agents that rely on it have a harder path to buying from you.

Orders will look normal. Shopify says agent orders appear in your admin like any other order, so watch channel and referrer attribution to see how much comes from AI.

Being found still comes first. An agent can only buy what it decides to recommend. In our own checks of 45 Shopify stores, 71% were never named in AI answers for what they sell.

What to check this week

  1. Shop Pay is turned on in Settings → Payments.
  2. Your products are eligible for Shopify Catalog and your policies (terms, privacy, returns) are filled in under Settings → Policies — Shopify requires these for selling in ChatGPT.
  3. Product descriptions are complete: what it is, who it's for, materials, sizes, care — the facts a shopper would ask about.
  4. Star ratings are readable by agents, not only shown on the page by JavaScript. Most review apps have a structured-data or "rich snippets" setting.
  5. Look in Sales channels → Agentic in your Shopify admin to see which AI channels your products are shared with.

A free Feedlegible audit checks most of this — Shop Pay, product data, ratings, policies — and shows what AI assistants recommend for what you sell.
